Islamabad-Skardu-Askoli-Concordia-K-2 BC-Hunza

Ranking among the top ten classic hikes in the world, Baltoro K-2 Base Camp Trek is a strenuous but rewarding experience. We head to Skardu and drive to Askole, a remote village and the last dwelling before entering into “the throne room of the mountain gods” as described by Galen Rowell, a famous climber and writer. While walking on Baltoro Glacier the panorama is matchless as we see several famous and beautiful mountains en-route. Finally we arrive at Concordia, the junction of Baltoro and Godwin Austin Glaciers with several other tributaries and a place serving as the base for the four giants of Karakorams i.e. Gasherbrum II, Broad Peak, and Hidden Peak or Gasherbrum I dominated by the king of the mountains, K-2.

DayProgram
01Upon arrival in Islamabad, we will transfer to the hotel for some rest. In the afternoon, we will have a sightseeing tour of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Overnight stay at the hotel.
02We can either fly to Skardu or drive to Chilas. If we fly, we’ll have a one-hour scenic flight with views of the mountains, including Nanga Parbat. If flying is not possible, we’ll drive to Chilas via Babusar Pass and spend the night there before embarking on our trek to K2.
03Drive to Skardu 2286m (11-12 hours): Full day at Deosai Plateau excursion, it is good to gain some good height before trek. Or After relatively early breakfast we will start our journey to Skardu. Driving on Karakoram Highway is an adventure in itself which is an unforgettable experience. Another fantastic drama unfolds when Nanga Parbat starts to play “hide and seek”, before we have a clear view at Thalaichi. At “Unique Place in the World” we have an opportunity to see three world’s highest ranges Karakoram, Himalaya and Hindu Kush. Driving further north at Juglot we turn right to begin our trip to Skardu. On arrival in Skardu, we transfer to hotel for overnight stay.
04We will have free day for preparations and briefing in Skardu or sightseeing of the city.
05Drive to Askoli by Jeeps. 6 hours We start our six to seven-hour-long adventurous jeep ride to Askoli with local crew and supplies along the Shigar and Braldo Valleys to the road ahead to Askoli. The last dwelling of about 60 houses, the villagers are self-sufficient and grow their cereals, vegetables, and fruits. Smiling and welcoming villagers greet us as we pass through villages on the rugged dirt and stone road. We have our lunch and a short photo break en route, the view on the way is breathtaking.
06Trek to Jhola (Pulley Bridge) (6-7 hours): We follow a trail next to the Braldu River which is an easy gentle walk and once passed the snout of the Biafo Glacier, we arrive at the green oasis of Korofong. After lunch we continue our trek from Korofong we follow the path up a side valley and cross the Dumardo River coming out of Choktoi and Panmah Glaciers by a bridge. We then walk for another half an hour or so to reach the Jhola Camp. Overnight in tents.
07Trek to Paiju 3380m 5-6 hours: The trail alternates between the river bed and terraces above, crossing boulder fields and side streams until coming to the Paiju. Paiju is a green oasis under the shadows of Paiju Peak (6611m). From this camp, we have the first views of the immense Baltoro Glacier and snowy peaks. Paiju campsite is often crowded and noisy. Overnight in tents.
08Trek to Urdukas. 7-8 hours Today’s walk is a bit longer and exhausting. After a thirty to forty-five minute walk we approach Baltoro Glacier. As we trek, every single step gains height on the undulate trail until we reach Urdukus campsite. Heavily used Urdukus is much larger than Paiju. The meadows above Urdukus offer one of the Karakoram’s finest panoramas. All the Trango Towers are visible, including Nameless Tower, which has the world’s longest granite face. Overnight in tents.
09Trek to Goro II. 6-7 hours The trail descends and goes straight out to the glacier’s middle. The trail from here to Concordia, although still obvious, is less of a highway, and remains on the Glacier. Masherbrum’s sheer granite north face and snow-crowned summit (7821m) come into view as you walk east up the Baltoro Glacier. The spectacular views of Muztagh Tower 7270m, Musherbrum 7800m, and Gasherbrum IV at the head of the Baltoro and Concordia are stunning. The campsite is actually on a glacier where ledges have been leveled out for the tents, providing not much comfort yet a pleasing experience.
10Trek to Concordia. 5 hours A four to five hours walk on the glacier takes us to the “The Throne Room of Mountain Gods”, the most impressive campsite anywhere in the world. As we walk on the glacier to reach Concordia, a magic spell embraces us. If the weather is clear luckily, we will have the most magnificent views of the mountain giants of Karakoram including the crown K2, which majestically stands just in front of you. The peaks tower over you and all appear to be tantalizingly close, Gasherbrum IV, Mitre Peak, Chogolisa 25,147ft/7,665m, and Broad Peak 26,401ft/8,047m are some of the high Karakoram giants to be seen.
